With thanks to Kermit the Frog… My friends were talking the other day about clocks. I found it amazing that the 12-hour clock is the same pretty much everywhere in the world. Even in odd, remote cultures like Italy. Why do people who can’t agree on anything else agree on time?

Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so. Douglas Adams

Passage of time was first measured by shadows. This only worked during daylight. And it wasn’t very exact. The amount of daylight varied with weather and time of year. Ancient egyptians measured how long it took to transition from day to night (dusk). It was discovered it took the same amount of time to go from night to day (dawn). They called the interval an “hour”. They also figured out there were 24 of them in a day (and 365 days in a year, but that’s another story).

Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana. Groucho Marx

The Babylonians adopted this 24 hour day concept but needed more precision for their astrological observations. Since they had a base-60 counting system (don’t ask), they divided the hour into 60
minutes and a minute into 60 seconds. Modern positioning of stars today is still notated in hours:minutes:seconds. We have the Romans to thank for the completely illogical double 12 hour system.
Certainly one of the major confusions is noon and midnight. How exactly noon can be 12AM and midnight 12PM… I will never know.

I’ve been on a calendar, but never on time. Marilyn Monroe

Northern Europe, where all work on mechanizing and making time pieces portible occured, used either Roman numerals or a new numeric system which had some really spiffy properties like “zero” and positional notation. It came from the Hindus through the middle east via trade. The word “clock” itself comes from the french/celtic/dutch word for “bell”.

Well, you know know as much about clocks as I do. I hope you enjoyed reading this little article as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please feel free to leave comments and corrections.

One of my favorites from TMRHE from ~flirt~

Posted in Advertisements, OFA Models, Photographers, Reviews, Uncategorized on March 13, 2009 by colleen Criss

I love jewelry, I love simple beauty and this necklace and earrings ~flirt~ added to The Most Random Hunt Ever is just fabulous!  Quickly became my favs so much so I’ve found myself  searching my inventory for outfits to suit the jewelry instead of the other way around !

flirthuntgift2

I wish pictures did it justice :) , it sparkles and shines its girly and delicate. If you took part in the hunt I’m sure you’ve found it, if you have not unpacked from the hunt do it now ! You’re gonna love these! Pop over to ~flirt~ , there are matching bracelets and rings for this set called Bloom.

While I’m here let me talk for a minute about about style, or better said …things that never go out of style. Things we buy and wear often, things we may have tucked away in the closet and come across looking for *gez I have nothing to wear!* I did that this morning and popped open my Last Call folder :) and I found this ….

lc

Dahlia … what always impressed me it that I’ve never had to *adjust prims* to fit me, the clothes were always perfect for me right out of the box. The styles, the colors the fold the wrinkles the shades and shading, timeless classic tasteful awesome clothes ! I’m pretty sure you’re not going to find Last Call items any more since it is closed, creator Ginny Talamasca, who I never met passed away November of ’07 I became a Second Life resident  in December of ’07. Before her partners , family and friends closed Last Calls doors forever I purchased a closet full of Ginny’s creations ! I loved them then and I love them now.

As a matter of fact the very 1st fashion contest I ever entered in Second Life  was for Wonderhair , now known as Lamora , and I wore this outfit for the photographs taken by Velvet Flytrap of  The Velvet Authority ! See Velvets flickr here .

This is the photo, laffs I was still a *newb* but Velvet created magic !

Btw, this hair is still one of my favorites, awesome casual look!

All poses are from my LAP AO  called New Female AO, my favorite AO in a folder of many !
